Litsa Kiousi

I am a dancer, performer, and choreographer based in Berlin.

I want to explore the complexity of intimacy | manifest its beauty through a poetic exploration of the body | recognise and challenge my borders | continue finding different forms of collaboration and contexts | initiate clever/flexible/fair/ strategies to sustain my work practically and financially.

The human body is at the center of my artistic work, which is heavily influenced by the post-punk movement, the experimental music scene, the performing arts, film, painting and literature.

I am interested in process-oriented work, which is permanently altered by the performances and further developed, so that the temporary result is always lively and flexible.

As a social being I want to create spaces charged with questions, disturbances, confrontations and failures.

Collaborations with artists from various fields has a fundamental importance, it’s a form of collective intelligence not be reduced to a kind of accompaniment but to act as a challenging force. Different approaches, aesthetics, social, political, and cultural backgrounds have a place and are discussed, collide and challenge each other in order to come together, collapse momentarily or fall apart.

I was born and raised in Athens where I received my BA as a dancer. I continued my studies in New York at the Merce Cunningham studio and at the Movement Research. I have taken workshops with Meg stuart/Damaged Goods, hancockandkelly, La Pocha nostra, David Hernandez, Julien Hamilton, Foofwa d’Im0bilité, Kei Takei among others.

Since a decade, beside several collaborations with different artists, I began creating my own work.

The dance-concerts, 'Where is the most beautiful funeral?', 'Dream Inspector', and the solo, 'watching alice' (selected for the final round of „Das Beste Deutsche Tanzsolo“), have been performed in clubs, galleries and theatres such as Rebound club (Athens), "Temporary Home"- Documenta 12 (Kassel ), Brotfabrik, Schwelle7 (Berlin), Schaubühne Lindenfels (Leipzig ), "638 Kilo Tanz und weitere Delikatessen" Festival (Essen ), Off-limits Festival (Dortmund), and Slim Week - A Multidisciplinary Music & Art Event (Berlin).

The live installation 'Visiting Time' has been presented at WW/Weiße Würfel gallery in Leipzig, Panke Berlin, Henrys Dream Festival in Roskilde and Berlin Soup Art Festival in Copenhagen.

At Eira33, Lisbon, I began presenting 'Visiting time(s)', a series of curated performative events with artists from different disciplines. The second edition took place in Panke Berlin, where I invited visual artist Richard Hancock (hancockandkelly /UK) and musicians Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten/D) and Hopek Quirin to join the event.

Together with the butoh dancer & choreographer Camille Mutel I created the project L'animalité Cabaret, which was presented in Paris and in Nancy at SOUTERRAIN PORTE VI.

I collaborated with the group Nomass for the project "The teeth of the dog at their heels", which was presented in Athens at Studio Plataion.

As a dancer I have performed extensively in various festivals and venues in Europe, the United States, and Asia in the works of Cosmin Manolescu, Sven Seeger, Chantal Yzermans/Radical Low, UnitControl/Bernard Baumgarten , Veronika Riz, Louise Wagner a.o.

The first acting experience I had with the theatre group unitedOFFproductions for the "Der Tod und noch drei Andere".

I am a guest-teacher for the Cunningham techique, contemporary dance and improvisation in various dance institutions and I regularly give workshops on movement, improvisation and copmposition in Athens, Berlin, Hamburg, Copenhagen.
